Movies of interest:
“Living your Dying” Barbara has copy for sharing. A documentary about Rev Mitsuo (Mits) Aoki, founder of the University of Hawaii Department of Religion. For over four decades the Rev. Dr. Aoki showed others how to experience death not merely as an end, but as a vital, inseparable part of life. His commitment to taking the terror out of death has touched the consciousness of an entire community and made an indelible lasting imprint in Hawaii.
“Being Mortal” FRONTLINE follows renowned New Yorker writer and Boston surgeon Atul Gawande as he explores the relationships doctors have with patients who are nearing the end of life. The film investigates the practice of caring for the dying, and shows how doctors are often remarkably untrained, ill-suited and uncomfortable talking about chronic illness and death with their patients. Will be shown at different venues by Hospice
“Moananuiakea” http://www.hokulea.com/moananuiakea-film/ Inspiring story of the Hokulea’s sail around the world.
How do we share our knowledge & values with younger generations?
YES! magazine current issue focus on death: https://www.yesmagazine.org/issues/death
General discussion: Where do we go from here? Is there interest in community outreach?, Events? Education?
Paolo shared how the knowledge he gained from our 6 week course and sharings over the years gave him the confidence & comfort in dealing with his mother’s death in unique ways. How could we offer education to the wider community? Where could we meet on a regular basis? Ken will contact All Saint’s Church for meeting space &/or showing a film there outdoors with discussion to follow.
One idea was to create a Conscious Living & Dying Symposium: A one day (4-6 hour) event open to public. Film, discussion, legal forms, empowerment, comfort with death, practical ways to support each other through death.
Bring your ideas or interest in planning for the future to our November meeting.
